The Eagles were soaring in Austin.

Lindale, led by three-time state champion Colter Maya and the gold-medal winning 1600-meter relay, captured the UIL Class 4A State Boys Track & Field championship on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas.

The Eagles totaled 60 points to win the title. Wimberley was second with 46 points and Austin Johnson third at 42.

The state crown goes along with the Eagles’ District 15-4A championship, the area championship and Region II championship to complete a dominant season.

Maya completed the three-peat in the 400-meter dash, outrunning his teammate Kaden Baze as the pair of Eagles finished 1-2.

Maya dashed to a time of 48.23 seconds, followed by Baze at 48.51.

The senior signee with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock won silver in the 400 at state as a freshman and has captured gold each of the past two seasons. Now, make it a trifecta.

The Eagles 4×400 relay jetted to a time of 3:16.35. The squad included Chad Ward, Baze, Nathan Bradford and Maya. Wimberley was runner-up at 3:16.62.

Lindale mined a silver in the 400-meter relay with a clocking of 41.54, just behind Austin Johnson’s 41.04. The Eagles relay included Ward, Maya, Bradford and Baze.

Ward completed the medal set with a bronze in the 200-meter dash by placing third at 21.30, just behind Lago Vista’s Swayde Griffin (21.15) and Dallas Kimball’s Camrin Jackson (21.20).

“I’m so proud of these kids,” Lindale head boys track and field coach Chad Cooper said. “Each one had a vital role in this season. Nathan Bradford had an unbelievable senior year of track. He was a tough kid and showed it each time he ran. Extremely proud of him. Chad Ward proved that he could be an elite runner by peaking at the right time. He did such a great job of starting our relays all year. So proud of how he ran tonight. Kaden Baze, I’m so proud of that young man. He trusted me when we moved him into the 400, and I’m so glad he did. He was so impressive by how he ran tonight. Colter Maya, so proud of this guy. A three-peat state champion in the 400 meters. So proud of all his hard work to achieve that. Then this year, he really was focused on wanting these relays to do well. Really appreciate all his hard work.”

Charles Anderson of Dallas Carter, who won the 400 at the Class 4A Region II meet, did not participate in the 400 at state.
