Girls Basketball Roundup: Hawkins, Winnsboro, Union Grove capture area wins

SLOCUM — The Hawkins Lady Hawks are area champions after defeating San Augustine 57-31 on Friday in the Class 2A Division I playoffs.

Two of Hawkins players scored in double-digits. Taetum Smith and Jentri Evans combined for 31 points, 17 and 14 points, respectively. Smith filled the stat column with seven rebounds, four steals, and four assists. Evans also had a big night with five steals, four rebounds, and an assist.



Other contributors for the Lady Hawks were: Alaya Scoggins (6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists); Haylee Skipworth (5 points, 2 assists); Karsyn Johnson (4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal); Ava Ellison (3 points, 2 steals); Keiper Pruitt (3 points); Londyn Wilson (2 points, 3 rebounds); Alana Gipson (2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals); and Ainsley Conner (1 point, 1 steal).

Smith had two 3-pointers with one apiece from Evans, Pruitt and Ellison.

Hawkins (28-1) advances to meet LaPoynor in the Region III semifinals next week. The Lady Flyers (24-11) won their area game 46-31 over Marlin.

WINNSBORO 55, PONDER 51

FARMERSVILLE — Hadlee Brown scored 20 points in leading the Winnsboro Lady Raiders to a 55-51 win over the Ponder Lady Lions on Friday in a Class 3A Division I area playoff game.

The Lady Raiders (33-3) advance to the Region II semifinals against Mineola (21-14) on Monday at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

UNION GROVE 34, WODEN 21

NEW SUMMERFIELD — Keira Taylor scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, as the Union Grove Lady Lions defeated the Woden Lady Eagles in a Class 2A Division area playoff game.

The Lady Lions (23-11) advance the Region III semifinals where they will face either Kerens or Jewett Leon next week.

Nico Carloni added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, for UG.

Others scoring for Union Grove were Taylor Campbell (2), Sarah Prince (2) and Mallorie Cannon (2).

Woden ends its season at 18-10.

LANCASTER 65, LONGVIEW 41

GRAND SALINE — Longview faced a challenge when it met state No. 4 Lancaster during Friday night’s Class 6A Division II girls basketball area round playoff matchup at the Grand Saline High School gym, and struggled in the early minutes of the game’s middle quarters in a 65-41 season-ending defeat.

The Lady Lobos finished the 2024-2025 season with a 22-8 record, while the Lady Tigers will bring an improved 25-5 year mark to next week’s UIL 6A Division II Region II semifinal against District 13-6A Division II one-seed Conroe Grand Oaks.

Savanna Barnes guided Lancaster to victory with 20 points, MaKenzie White produced 16 points, KaMoriya Davis earned nine, and Monique Phoenix finished with eight.

Bethany Baltes led Longview with 22 points, four rebounds and two assists, Jailiya Rockmore finished with five points and eight rebounds, and Ashawnti Smith and Markayla Haynes both contributed four points in the loss.
