The Smith County fire marshal received an annual community service award from the Greater Tyler Association of Realtors.

Connie McCoy-Wasson received the J.B. Smith Award for Service at the organization’s annual First Responders Appreciation Dinner on Nov. 15. Her brother, Tyler Police Officer Wayne Thomas, presented the award.

“I never would have dreamed in a million years that I would ever receive this award,” McCoy-Wasson said in a news release. She also credited her staff, saying, “It’s who you work with that makes you who you are.”

McCoy-Wasson was nominated for the award by first responders in the jurisdiction of the Greater Tyler Association of Realtors, including Smith, Wood, Cherokee and Franklin counties.

The recipient must have at least 20 years of experience, exceptional career-long performance, make a positive impact on the community, exhibit leadership and provide inspiration to others, among other qualifications.

McCoy-Wasson became the Smith County Fire Marshal in 2015, and is the first woman to hold the position. Previously, she was the interim fire marshal, a deputy fire marshal, and a secretary.
