Daniel McNeel Lane passed away peacefully on September 13, 2018 after a brief but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer, at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Spruiell Lane, his daughter Linda Lane and her husband Jay Ben Avner, his son Daniel McNeel (“Neel”) Lane, Jr. and his wife Jennifer Espronceda Lane, his son Maury Spruiell Lane, and his daughter Oleta Lane Salyards and her husband Paul Salyards, eleven grandchildren, Tyler, Laith, Daniel, Andrew, Shelby, Anna, Sam, Zach, Carolyn, Winfield, and Maverick. Dr. Lane was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Samuel and Mary Lane, and his son, Winfield Maverick Lane. Born on January 25, 1936, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Lane was a descendant of Samuel Augustus Maverick, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He was also a descendant of Daniel McNeel, whose family was among the “Old Three Hundred” in Stephen F. Austin’s first colony in Mexico. Dr. Lane graduated from Saint Stephens Episcopal School (Austin) in 1953, and attended The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. He graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School (Dallas) in 1961. In a long and distinguished career, Dr. Lane worked both as a physician devoted to healing patients (mostly children) suffering from cancer and blood disease, and as a research scientist devoted to advancing medical knowledge. In particular, he became an internationally known expert on the treatment of lipid disorders, lipid nutrition, and cancer chemotherapy. Dr. Lane was also an educator who served on the faculties of four different medical schools in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. In 1973, Dr. Lane was awarded a PhD degree by the University of Oklahoma in Biochemistry. Over the course of his career, Dr. Lane published 6 book chapters, over 60 journal articles, and 50 abstracts. In his later years, Dr. Lane conducted extensive research and field study that resulted in his narrative history book, Sam Maverick’s Trail (2017), about the 1848 Chihuahua-El Paso Pioneer Expedition, which was the first American exploration of far west Texas. A memorial service for Dr. Lane will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 1:30 pm.
