Of all movies named after candies to be released this year, this is probably the best.
“Peppermint” is an action-revenge thriller starring Jennifer Garner as Riley North, a woman whose husband and daughter were killed by a Los Angeles drug cartel. Her husband was asked to be part of a job to rip off kingpin Diego Garcia (Juan Pablo Raba) but backed out, claiming it wasn’t worth the risk. Unfortunately, no one in the cartel knew this, so they put the hit out on him anyway.
Rating: ***1/2 (out of 5 stars)
After the men who executed her family were let off due to Garcia buying the judge and the district attorney, Riley goes into hiding. She returns five years later to seek revenge on anyone and everyone that was involved in the deaths of her family.
While LAPD detectives Carmichael (John Gallagher Jr.) and Beltran (Juan Ortiz) are following the case, the local homeless community, along with people on the internet, have branded her a hero.
“Peppermint” is directed by Pierre Morel, who is best known outside of his native France for directing the action-thriller “Taken.” The film was written by Chad St. John, who was one of the four credited writers on the 2016 film “London Has Fallen.”
This movie is sort of the female equivalent to the Eli Roth directed remake of “Death Wish” from earlier this year, minus much of the heavy handed politics that were crow-barred into that film. While “Death Wish” at least attempted to be tongue in cheek (whether it was successful is debatable), this takes a much more serious approach.
“Peppermint” doesn’t really bring anything new to the table in terms of revenge films. The film is absolutely predictable at every turn. However, it is, ultimately, a mostly satisfying movie and probably the best thing Jennifer Garner has done in years.
“Peppermint” is not one of the best movies of the year. It certainly has one of the worst trailers, which made me dread seeing it, but by the halfway point, the movie was winning me over.
I say it is worth catching it as a rental or a matinee. While you can probably guess where the movie goes, the journey is amusing enough to enjoy.
