Tyler ISD to consider school name change at meeting

After nearly a year of discussion and community action, the Tyler ISD board of trustees could take action to rename Robert E. Lee High School at Monday’s board meeting.

The district will receive an updated cost analysis on any potential name changes to its high schools and later in the meeting consider changing the name of Robert E. Lee High School to “Lee High School.”

The move, requested by board vice president Wade Washmon, has been met with criticism from community groups in favor and against the change.

The Tyler ISD Parent Coalition said a change to Lee does not go far enough to remove the name of Robert E. Lee and any symbols of the Confederacy.

The Save Our Name group said they do not want to see any change to Robert E. Lee whatsoever.

The meeting is expected to draw a big crowd. Several meetings over the past year have drawn more than 200 people when a discussion of the name change has come up. The district expects this one to be no different.

In the past the district has limited public comment to two minutes per person. That section often runs over an hour when residents discuss the name of the high school. The agenda also has board discussion of a cost analysis and potential name change which will be time consuming.

Those wishing to speak must sign up at least 10 minutes prior to the meeting’s 7 p.m. start time. Speakers are asked to be respectful.

The meeting will take place in the Davidson Conference Room of the Jim Plyler Instructional Complex, 807 W. Glenwood Blvd.
