Tyler’s McConnell, Hideaway’s White top Azalea Trail Junior Golf Classic

Tyler’s Sydney McConnell captured first place in the 2018 Azalea Trail Junior Golf Classic at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler.

Tyler’s Sydney McConnell and Hideaway’s Evan White took the top two divisions during Sunday’s final round of the annual Azalea Trail Junior Golf Classic at Hollytree Country Club.

The tournament is part of the Northern Texas PGA All-American Tour.

McConnell, who plays for the Tyler Lee golf team, won the Girls 13-18 Division with a 36-hole total of 17-over 161 (78-83). She finished ahead of Dallas’s Stephany Barbosa (88-78—166) and REL teammate Annaka Watts of Tyler (90-84—174).

McConnell and Watts are scheduled to compete with their Lady Raider teammates in the District 11-6A Golf Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday at Mesquite Golf Club.



McConnell also won the Texas Women’s Open qualifier (May 31 to June 2 at Rolling Hills Country Club in Arlington) and gains entry into the Texas Girls’ Invitational and the Ben Hogan Junior Cup Matches (Aug. 7-8 at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth). Barbosa qualifies for the Texas Girls’ Invitational.

White, a member of the Lindale Eagles golf team, won the Boys 13-18 Division with a 2-under 142, including a 4-under 68 on Sunday. He had a 74 on Saturday.

White, who won medalist honors at the Lindale High School/Hide-A-Way Lake Club Invitational on March 19, won by three strokes over Keller’s Jase Summy (75-70—145). Placing third was John Wigglesworth of McKinney with a 148 (72-76).

Other winners in the boys division were Longview’s Isaac Adams (12 & under) and Summy (13-14). Tyler’s Jacob Cole finished second in the 13-14 division.

By winning the 13-18 division, White has qualified for the Byron Nelson Junior Championship (June 5-7 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas), Texas State Junior Championship (July 23-25 at Horseshoe Bay Resort in Horseshoe Bay) and Ben Hogan Junior Cup Matches (Aug. 7-8 at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth). By placing as runner-up in the same division, Summy also qualified for the Byron Nelson Junior Championship and Texas State Junior Championship.

In the girls divisions winners were Athens’s Sidney Robertson (12 & under) and Keller’s Amelia Stankiewicz (13-14).
