Jordan Reichenberger, an Austin street preacher, shared his story of living five days with the Church of Wells to Dr. Phil McGraw, on the “Dr. Phil” show.

The church is something of a mystery in Cherokee County, and is regularly accused of being a cult. The church is located in Wells, Texas, which is at the southern tip of Cherokee County.

The Reichenberger family alleges Jordan was drugged with sedatives while at the Church of Wells.

The church posted a short written response to the segment on its site, calling it a “sad day.” It also posted a 21-minute more detailed response.

“‘Dr. Phil’ passes for fact, his words and ways pass for sincerity, and a studio audience watching the intimate details of broken families and wounded souls is normal and acceptable!,” the statement read. “What have we become! What treachery prevails among this debauched land! May God break this spell that is cast over the once great, now base nation of America! And may God deliver you, dear viewer to a love and understanding of the truth, before the snare is closed around the foolish nation!”

Reichenberger’s family said on the segment that he came in contact with the church on Halloween 2016 while street preaching on 6th Street in Austin. The two groups were preaching on the same corner of the street.

Reichenberger’s family told Dr. Phil that they reported their son missing, and his last cell phone pinged near Wells.

Reichenberger then called his family three days later, and they drove to Wells to get him on the fifth day. He left after four hours of negotiation, the family alleged.

Once he was home, the family submitted a hair follicle drug test, which found a prescription muscle relaxer as well as an over-the-counter sleep aid in his system.

Reichenberger said he believes the members started to try to separate him from his family in Austin.

“It was difficult to see what they were doing,” he said on the show. “A lot of this came up in hindsight — how they were phrasing it and how they were trying to demonize my family.”

Dr. Phil also spoke with the parents of Catherine Grove, a nursing student from Fayetteville Arkansas who disappeared in July 2013. She was found at the Church of Wells, and has since married one of its members. Her parents said the church would not allow them to speak with Ms. Grove, but they hear tidbits on how she’s doing from townspeople.
