2 dead after passenger train, dump truck collide

EULESS (AP) — Authorities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area say a passenger train collided with a dump truck that was on the tracks, killing two people inside the truck.

Emergency crews say 11 people on the Trinity Railway Express were also injured in the crash Saturday afternoon and were taken to a nearby hospital. Two patients are in critical condition, while three others have serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred in Euless, about halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth.

The Dallas Morning News reports the collision shattered some train windows and damaged the front of the train. Dallas Area Rapid Transit spokesman Morgan Lyons tells KHOU the accident should have been avoidable.

It is not clear how fast the train was traveling or why the dump truck was on the railroad tracks.

Man charged in death of retired priest

RAYMONDVILLE (AP) — Authorities say a man has been charged in the death of a retired Roman Catholic priest whose body was found buried in a remote area of far South Texas after he went missing earlier this month.

The Texas Rangers confirmed Friday that the body found Aug. 17 in Willacy County was that of 71-year-old William “Bill” Costello, a retired Massachusetts parish priest. He’d last been seen Aug. 1 on South Padre Island.

The Valley Morning Star in Harlingen reports that 27-year-old Juan Carlos Baez Escobedo was arrested Wednesday in the slaying. He remained jailed Saturday on $2 million bond on a murder charge. Jail records didn’t list an attorney for him.

The Catholic Diocese in Fall River, Massachusetts, said Costello came to Texas more than three years ago.

Travis County officials: deaths murder-suicide

AUSTIN (AP) — Authorities believe a man fatally shot his girlfriend and then killed himself in front of their home near Austin.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that 26-year-old Omar Garcia apparently killed 23-year-old Nancy Garcia before killing himself.

Their bodies were discovered Friday morning after a passing motorist saw Omar Garcia’s body lying next to a vehicle and called 911. When deputies arrived they found Nancy Garcia dead in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. A pistol was lying next to Omar Garcia.

The sheriff’s office said Omar Garcia was recently arrested for assault/family violence and Nancy Garcia was the victim.

The sheriff’s office says there doesn’t appear to be a connection between the two deaths and the discovery last month of a body within a mile of their house.

Testimony ends in murder trial of ex-police officer

DALLAS (AP) — Testimony has ended in the murder trial of a white former police officer who fired into a moving car filled with black teenagers leaving a house party, killing a 15-year-old passenger.

Ex-Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver was fired after the April 2017 shooting and faces a murder charge in the killing of high school freshman Jordan Edwards.

Jurors on Friday heard testimony from a woman who says Oliver pointed a gun at her after she rearended his vehicle about two weeks before the on-duty shooting. The woman’s sister also testified Oliver pointed the firearm and described him as raging.

Oliver on Thursday said he never pointed the firearm at anybody, but testified that he held the weapon up against his chest during the encounter. Court resumes on Monday.
