Lufkin team qualifies for Junior League World Series

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Lufkin’s Junior League Baseball team (13-to 14-year-olds) is headed to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan.

The team qualified for the World Series with a 3-0 win over Eastdale (New Mexico) on Monday in the Southwest Regional championship.

The team has seven players from the 2017 Lufkin Little League team that won the United States championship at the Little League World Series — Chip Buchanan, Hunter Ditsworth, Mark Requena, Christian Mumphery, Charlie Deaton, Kolby Kovar and Lance Modisette.

Requena pitched 6 1/3 innings on Monday, allowing four hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Bebo Hinojosa recorded the final two outs.

Hinojosa had two hits, including a double.



Gavin Del Toro had a single and two RBIs, and Ditsworth drove in a run.

Other team members are Cameron Jackson, Sam Flores, Aidan Wood, Ricky Rodriguez and Kyle Johnson.

Lufkin went 3-0 at the Southwest Regional. Lufkin qualified for the tournament by winning the Texas East State Tournament July 14-17 at Faulkner Park in Tyler.

The Junior League World Series will take place Aug. 12-19 in Taylor, Michigan, and the championship game will be televised on ESPN2.
