ENNIS – Robert E. Lee tennis competed recently in the Frostbite, an invitational tournament held each year by Ennis High School.
Despite the event’s name, players were greeted with unseasonably warm conditions. Sophomore Claire Fisher breezed to a championship in girls singles without dropping a set. She defeated a player from Rowlett in the final, 6-0, 6-2.
Lee’s Avery Riley won the girls consolation title.
In boys singles, All Saints Thomas Su defeated Lee’s Nathan Drain in the semifinals before Thomas took out fellow Trojan Luke Twaddell in the final to take the title. Twaddell had beaten Lee’s Jackson Nowlin in the quarterfinals.
In boys doubles, Evan Von Eschenbach and Nathan Drain reached the final, but were stopped in straight sets to finish as runner-up.
The same held true for Lee in mixed doubles where Lilly Deathridge and Cole Von Eschenbach reached the final, but were defeated by a team from Ennis.
“This is our first tournament since team tennis and most of my kids who played singles are now playing doubles and mixed doubles,” Lee coach Ronnie Blake said. “Overall they did pretty well.
The Red Raiders will next compete at a tournament in Rockwall on Friday.
