A free Drone Training 101 event is set to take place from noon to 2 p.m. on March 29 at the Tyler Indoor Sports Complex, offering children an opportunity to explore aviation technology.

The event will introduce kids to drone technology and aviation careers. Participants will gain a better understanding of science, math and communication skills while learning to operate drones.

It was organized by Continuing Faith in Christ Ministries youth program Unlocked Potential/STREAM Powered and Coding with a Twist, a Houston-based organization increasing awareness of coding and robotics to the youth.

Commercial drone pilots are in high demand for services like videography, aerial photography and surveying. With major companies like Amazon, FedEx, UPS and Walmart using drones for package delivery, opportunities in the field are growing, according to organizer Daryl L. Davis.

“Aviation is going to another level,” Davis said. “That’s the new generation.”

Davis wants to make sure the next generation is prepared and familiar with the technologies.

Tyler will soon have an Amazon distribution center, which could open doors for young people with drone skills. Through Unlocked Potential, children can explore these career paths and potentially become certified drone operators when they turn 16.

The event will feature free food and drinks for participating children and their parents. Sponsorships have allowed the organization to provide drone equipment and set up obstacle courses for hands-on training.

Professionals like Sha’Rell Webb from Coding with a Twist will offer on-site instruction. Additionally, a former Air Force pilot who serves on the organization’s board will share aviation knowledge and first-hand experience.

“It’s going to be fun, but we also want it to be educational,” Davis said.
