Marlondos Fields’ appreciation for black history, artwork and artifacts can been seen though the traveling exhibit he’s displayed throughout the community for the last several months.

Fields, of Tyler, said he collected the pieces during the 20 years he was in the U.S. Navy.

“My passion and love has always be toward history,” he said. “The information we collect is not to be (kept), it’s to be shared.”

On Saturday, Fields hopes to share his passion for black history in the inaugural “We Are Family” exhibit from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Glass Recreation Center.

The purpose of the exhibit, held by Field’s nonprofit, Yesterday’s Tomorrow, is to honor black history and culture. In addition to art and artifacts, the event will feature games, entertainment, door prizes and more. Kopastetic will perform live music at the event, and a Marvel Comics character is expected to make an appearance.

“There is something for everybody,” Fields said. “Everybody who attends will leave with something in hand.”

The price to attend the event will be $5, with a portion of the proceeds going to the East Texas Veterans Alliance. Fields added, the event will be family-friendly and is geared toward people of all ages and backgrounds.

He also hopes the event brings a stronger sense of unity to the community.

“(Letting) everybody know we are family is what (this event) is about,” Fields said. “It is going to be a big day of unity with (people interacting) with each other.”
