Mayfield’s shot lifts John Tyler girls into playoffs

MABANK – Alyssa Mayfield wasn’t about to end her senior season without going to the postseason, even after John Tyler trailed by 15 in the first quarter.
The Stephen F. Austin signee hit a shot at the buzzer in overtime to beat Rockwall-Heath 60-58 in a District 11-6A fourth-place playoff on Friday at Panther Gymnasium.
Mayfield scored a game-high 28 points for the Lady Lions (19-12), who will face Lufkin in the Class 6A bi-district playoffs on Monday at a time and location to be determined.
John Tyler trailed 16-1 early on and 18-4 after one quarter but heated up in the fourth to force overtime.
Daz Johnson added 11 points for the Lady Lions, while Kaleon Grant chipped in nine and Destini Whitehead seven.
Alexa Hoy scored 21 to lead Heath (17-16), with Macy Wilkerson added 14.
