John Tyler’s Mayfield, Lee’s Morgan receive 11-6A girls basketball superlative honors

John Tyler senior Alyssa Mayfield helped the Lady Lions reach the regional semifinals for the first time since 2004.
Prior to that postseason run, Mayfield was a key reason the Lady Lions made it out of District 11-6A and into the playoffs as the league’s fourth seed.

Mayfield averaged right at 20 points per game and was chosen Offensive Player of the Year on the District 11-6A girls basketball team released this week.
Robert E. Lee freshman Aaliyah Morgan, who led the Lady Raiders to a third-place finish in district and their first playoff win since 2005, was named Newcomer of the Year after she averaged nearly a double-double per game.
District champion Mesquite Horn received MVP and Coach of the Year honors with sophomore N’Yah Boyd chosen Most Valuable Player and Darrin Samuels named Coach of the Year.
Rockwall sophomore Jordan Mathis was named Defensive Player of the Year.
All told, John Tyler received six all-district nods with junior Destini Whitehead and senior Daz’Monique Johnson chosen first team, and senior Shay Johnson and juniors Jazmyne Hicks and J’Kimbira Criss chosen second team.
REL also received six selections with junior Ja’Kayla Bowie and Tyreesha Blaylock named to the first team, freshman Alyssia Thorne chosen second team, and freshman Hannah Haynes and sophomore Ke’Aja Lacy named honorable mention.

Notes: John Tyler completed its season with a 22-13 record, falling to Spring Dekaney 66-63 in the Class 6A Region II semifinals and returns five juniors. … Robert E. Lee completed its season 18-16, falling to Dallas Skyline 52-36 in the 6A area round. … REL returns its starting five and eight players overall.
