Lions take road win over Marshall

- Winnsboro’s Kyler Finney (23) drives past Mineola’s Brayden Alley (23) as the Red Raiders edged the Yellowjackets 52-45 on Tuesday in Winnsboro. After dropping their first three District 13-3A games, the Red Raiders have come back for five straight wins to move into postseason contention.
MARSHALL — Four Lions scored in double figures as Tyler defeated the Marshall Mavericks, 65-45, on Tuesday in a District 15-5A basketball game at Maverick Gym.
The Lions improve to 13-14 on the season and 7-3 in district. The Mavericks fall to 8-17 and 2-8.

Kenson Anderson led Tyler with 13 points, followed by Marquette Martin (12), Jace Sanford (12) and Jaishua Brown (11).
Also scoring for the Lions were Geordon Mitchell (6), Aidan Keyes (3), Derrick McFall (2), Keiland Garvey (2), La’Marcus Lamb (2) and Maki Adams (2).
Anderson connected on three 3-pointers with Martin (2) and Keyes (1) adding treys.
The Lions were 9 of 12 from the free throw line.
Tyler played shutdown defense, holding the Mavericks to five points in the first quarter and nine points in the second quarter. The Lions led 13-5 after one and 31-14 at halftime. Marshall pulled within 45-34 entering the fourth period, but the Lions outscored the Mavs, 20-11, in the final period for the final 20-point margin.
Robert Johnson led the Mavericks with nine points, Jayden Cooks (8), followed by Terrence Walker (7), Ryan Knox (5), Rickey Oney (5), Raijon Sims (6), Caleb Paul (3) and Jamarion Sparks (2).

The Mavericks were 9 of 14 from the free throw line.
In other district results: Mount Pleasant 71, Texas High 39; Longview 65, Whitehouse 27; and Hallsville 71, Pine Tree 44.
Mount Pleasant and Longview lead the district at 9-1, while the Lions and Hallsville are at 7-3. Rounding out the league include Whitehouse (3-7), Marshall (2-8), Texas High (2-8) and Pine Tree (1-9).
The Lions will host Senior Night and Youth Night on Friday as they play Whitehouse at 7:15 at the Lions Den. Marshall visits Hallsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Chapel Hill 55, Spring Hill 48
NEW CHAPEL HILL — Dee Brisbon scored 13 points and Isiah Mayfield grabbed 10 rebounds as the No. 17 Chapel Hill Bulldogs defeated the Spring Hill Panthers 55-48 on Tuesday in a District 17-4A basketball game.
The Bulldogs got to 23-4 on the season and 8-0 in district. The Panthers go to 12-14 and 4-5.
Brisbon had three 3-pointers and Mayfield scored seven points.
Others contributing were Cameron Kelley (12 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks), Jayvin Mayfield (8 points), Trevor Brooks (6 points), Jorden Ford (4 points), Jordyn Bradshaw (3 points) and Malik Gee (2 points).
The Bulldogs travel to Gilmer on Friday to take on the Buckeyes. Spring Hill plays host to Marshall Christian Academy at 6:15 p.m. Friday in a non-district in Longview.
Tyler HEAT 73, East Texas Chargers 42
BULLARD — Elijah Grimes hit for 19 points and teammates Jackson Tomlin and Aiden Shelton added 12 points each as the Tyler HEAT defeated the East Texas Chargers 73-42 on Tuesday.
Others scoring for the HEAT were Eli Anderson (9), Coen Starr (8), Waker Hartman (6), Kedren Penney (5) and John Hall (2).
Grimes and Shelton hit three 3-pointers each, while Tomlin had two treys and Penney one.
The HEAT (29-6) visits Dallas Thunder at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Chargers (16-6) hosts Mount Pleasant CHAAMP HomeSchool at 7:15 p.m. Friday in Longview.
Canton 58, Cumberland 42
CANTON — Jaden Pickerill hit for 18 points to lead the Canton Eagles to a 58-42 win over the Cumberland Knights on Tuesday in a District 16-4A basketball game.
The win moves the Eagles to 17-13 overall and 7-1 in district. The Knights fall to 3-21 and 0-9.
Mason Huson and Cason Bell were also in double figures scoring for Canton, hitting 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Others scoring for the Eagles were Nathan Whitlock (6) and Justus Petree (4).
Bell and Huson each hit two 3-pointers and Pickerill added one trey.
Cedrick Granberry led the Knights with 15 points. He was followed by Wilson Bedford (11), Josue Shareef (6), Jeremiah Whitmore (5), Byron Gibson (2), Timo Simmons (2) and Israel Spencer (1).
Canton visits Brownsboro at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Cumberland hosts Brownsboro on Feb. 6.
Athens 54, Brownsboro 41
ATHENS — Gekyle Baker and Keaton Delaney combined for 30 points for the Brownsboro Bears, but Athens pulled away for a 54-41 victory on Tuesday in a District 16-4A basketball game.
Baker hit for 16 points, along with four 3-pointers. Delaney had two treys while scoring 14 points.
Others scoring for Brownsboro were Lane Shaw (5), Ryan Davis (3), Isaiah Dawson (1), Jacob Fulgham (1) and Hudson Childers (1). Davis had a 3-pointer.
Jorien Ray led Athens with 18 points, followed by Jansen Harris (10), Ja’marion Williams (8), Julious Brewer (8), Jase Warren (6), Cody Carter (2) and AJ White (2).
Harris had two 3-pointers, followed by Brewer (2) and Ray (1).
Athens won the JV (50-29) and frosh (45-30) games.
Brownsboro (13-16, 2-7) plays host to Canton at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Athens (15-14, 7-2) visits Van at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Troup 64, Elysian Fields 41
TROUP — Four Tigers scored in double figures, paced by Trae Davis’ 15 points, as Troup scored a 64-41 over Elysian Fields on Tuesday in a District 16-3A basketball game.
The Tigers improve to 22-6 overall and 5-3 in district. The Yellowjackets fell to 10-10 and 2-7.
Others scoring for Troup were Carson Davenport (12), Jarett Castillo (10), Braxton Barton (10), Shane Jasper (5), Hudson Harrell (4), Tre Anderson (4) and Keenan Foster (4).
Davenport had four 3-pointers. Barton had two treys with Davis adding one.
Darius Rather led EF with 10 points, followed by Billy Green (7), Tee Stephens (6), Bernard Parker (6), Jay Johnson (5), Brandon Kennedy (4), Damon Harrison (2) and Andrew Boyd (1).
Parker had two 3-pointers and Green had one.
Troup visits Waskom on Friday.
