KILGORE – Showing the same form that allowed him to shoot a 29 for one nine-hole segment during US Open qualifying earlier this year, Flint’s Stetson McMillan fired a two-under 70 Sunday at Meadowbrook Country Club to win its annual invitational tournament celebrating its 80th birthday.

First played in 1937 and won by Bill Clark of Gladewater, the Meadowbrook event is one of the few individual competitions remaining on what was once known as the barbecue circuit during its glory years in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

A list of past winner is impressive with the likes of Wally Ulrich, Earl Stewart Jr., Billy Maxwell, Jacky Cupit and Miller Barber all going on to later win on the PGA Tour.

McMillan is an aspiring pro originally from Lindale who hopes to qualify for the Web.com tour later this year.

His 70 followed an opening 67 on Friday and a rain-shortened 32 for the nine holes played in the Championship Flight on Saturday.

His 11-under total was four better than two-time Meadowbrook winner and Cascades club champion Bryan Baker.

It was the first time weather shortened the tournament since 2010 when Blaine Weiterman of Overton won the title.

Finishing third another three shots back of Baker was Joel Thelan of Marshall while Tyler’s Rick Maxey led a logjam of three golfers tying for fourth a shot behind Thelan.

Joining Maxey at 2-under par for the tournament were Patrick Palmer of Kilgore and Devin Jackson of Longview.

Played late in the afternoon, only the Championship flight was shortened to 45 holes.

The other five flights completed 54 holes with the following golfers winning their respective flights: Masters – Patrick Rhodes (213); St. Andrews – Daniel Pepper (224); Pebble Beach – Justin Adair (230); Pinehurst – Don White (237) and Colonial – Josh Pollick (243). A total of 107 golfers participated.

“It was a great tournament as always,” tournament official Josh Spaldwin said.

“The rain tried to hold us down but we prevailed. Congrats to Stetson on an awesome performance.”
