U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert was in Alabama on Monday helping Roy Moore campaign against Doug Jones for one of the state’s senate seats.

Gohmert, R-Tyler, and former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon will appear at the “Drain the Swamp” rally in Midland City outside Dothan on Monday night, according to AL.com, an online publication that covers Alabama state news.

At the center of the election is Republican Roy Moore, a former jurist twice removed as state chief justice and now accused of sexual misconduct with teenage girls decades ago, and Democrat Doug Jones, an erstwhile federal prosecutor best known for prosecuting two Ku Klux Klansmen responsible for killing four black girls in the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church, according to the Associated Press.

The winner of Tuesday’s election will take the seat held previously by Trump’s attorney general, Jeff Sessions. Republicans control the Senate with 52 seats.

Moore will be counting on stronger turnout from his largely evangelical base in smaller communities, according to the New York Times.

Both Gohmert and Bannon are well known to activists, largely through their prominence in conservative media, though neither has close ties to Alabama, the Times reports.

In a statement, Gohmert expressed support for Moore’s candidacy.

“Roy invited me out to this rally tonight. I met him many years ago. I know the kind of difference a man of principle can make. He’s no racist; and, he’s dedicated his life to making America a better place, yet (is) being tried in the media,” Gohmert’s statement read. “Let’s elect him, get to the bottom of the facts and then announce a verdict on evidence and not on claims that may be fraudulent.”

Gohmert also expressed concern that accusations against Roy Moore came decades after the alleged incidents.

“As a (former) judge and Chief Justice, I was exceedingly tough on men who harmed women including – looking a man in the eyes and telling him he would forfeit his life for what he did to a woman,” the statement read. “There’s a reason we have statutes of limitation for making criminal claims 38 years later. It is nearly impossible to defend yourself on any given date and time after that much time has passed. Further, there are so many indications of deceptions in these claims. What ever happened to due process in America? Why do the establishment senators and media get to say who represents Alabama?”

Moore and Gohmert are both former judges.

Gohmert reportedly came to Monday’s rally early and helped set up. Tyler Smith, a video journalist for One America News Network, tweeted a photo of Gohmert helping before the rally.
