The father of Patrick Mahomes was arrested Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated third or more.

Patrick “Pat” Mahomes Sr., 52, was arrested on-sight by the Tyler Police Department around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on West Gentry Parkway. He was booked into the Smith County Jail on Saturday night then released Sunday on a $10,000 bond.

In 2019, Mahomes Sr. was sentenced to 40 days in jail for DWI second or more. Judicial records state he served weekends to fulfill that sentence. This latest charge is a third-degree felony, which is punishable by two to 10 years in prison.

Mahomes Sr.’s arrest was his sixth driving while intoxicated arrest in Smith County since 2012, according to online jail records.

His vehicle registration had been expired since September 2022, according to an arrest affidavit. The officer saw an open 16-ounce beer can in the console of Mahomes Sr.’s car during the traffic stop, the affidavit states.

Mahomes Sr.’s bond conditions prohibit him from drinking alcohol or using drugs, and he must submit to random drug testing, according to CBS19. He’s also been ordered to install a ignition interlocking device on any vehicle he drives.

Mahomes Sr. is the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes, a Whitehouse native, will lead the Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday in Super Bowl LVIII.

Pat Mahomes was as big a high school all-sports star back in the day before his son was an all-everything prep standout. The elder Mahomes played for the Lindale Eagles, while his son grew up a few miles south in Smith County, donning the maroon and white of the Whitehouse Wildcats.

Mahomes Sr. was an all-state quarterback in the late 1980s at Lindale as well as all-state in basketball and baseball. He turned down scholarship offers in basketball and football to several schools including Arkansas before going the Major League Baseball route. He was taken in the sixth round of the 1987 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He also played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburg Pirates. He was in the majors for 11 years.
