Huff, Welch top Azalea 10K

Gary Huff and Kristina Welch were the big winners on Saturday in the annual Azalea 10K that started and concluded at Bergfeld Park.

Huff, 24, won the men’s race in a time of 35 minutes and 39 seconds, while the 17-year-old Welch won the female division with a clocking of 47:01.


Placing second in the men’s race was Nicholas Andrade, 32, in 40:12.

In the Masters division, Armando Bocanegra, 49, won the male race with a time of 40:35. In the female race, Kristi Bellamy, 45, captured first with a time of 51:08.

Bocanegra was third overall as well.

Following Welch in the women’s race were Jaime Briggs, 37, with a time of 48:48; and Diana Johnson, 22, in a clocking of 49:23.

Some 533 runners entered the annual event – 317 in the 5K and 216 in the 10K.

The run benefits The Children’s Village, a charitable, non-profit corporation. Its purpose is to provide 24-hour residential foster care to neglected, abused and abandoned children from the Tyler, Smith County and Northeast Texas area.

In the 5K race, Emmanuel Zea, 28, won the men’s event with a time of 19:23. Rafael Ibarra, 18, was second at 19:31 with Stephen Gruenwald, 24, third at 19:42.

Megan Bomba, 28, took the women’s race in 22:26. Janae Fabian, 23, was runner-up at 22:40, followed by Claire Carnes, 16 (24:09).

In the men’s Masters race, 42-year-old Sergio Hernandez won in a time of 20:39.

Marianne Chandler, 51, captured the women’s Masters race in 26:12.
