Sanford’s last-second shot lifts Lions

Cumberland Academy won its first district game in four years with a 53-48 win over the Brownsboro Bears on Tuesday in a District 16-4A basketball game in Tyler.

TEXARKANA — Jace Sanford drove from the left block, hitting a shot in the middle of the lane with three seconds showing as the Tyler Lions defeated the Texas High Tigers, 67-65, on Tuesday in a District 15-5A basketball game at the Tiger Center.



The Tigers did not get a shot. After inbounding the ball, the basketball was deflected near mid-court.

The win moves the Lions to 15-14 on the season and 9-3 in district. Tyler is tied with Hallsville for third place. Longview leads at 11-1, followed by Mount Pleasant (10-2). All four teams have clinched playoff berths with two games to play.

Tyler returns to play on Friday, traveling to Longview for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Lobos at Lobo Coliseum. Texas High (11-20, 2-10) returns to play on Friday, hosting Hallsville.

Jasihua Brown led the Lions with 23 points, including hitting 10 of 10 at the free throw line.

Others scoring for Tyler were Derrick McFall (18), Sanford (8), Marquette Martin (8), Geordon Mitchell (7) and La’Marcus Lamb (2).

McFall, Brown, Mitchell and Martin all hit 3-pointers.

The Lions were 21 of 25 at the free throw line.

Trevon Ellis led the Tigers with 20 points.

Cumberland 53, Brownsboro 48

Jeremiah Whitmore hit for 16 points and RJ McKenzie added 11 as the Cumberland Knights earned their first district win in four years, a 53-48 win over Brownsboro on Tuesday in a District 16-4A game at The Castle on the Cumberland Academy campus in Tyler.

The Knights go to 4-21 overall and 1-9 in district, while the Bears fall to 13-18 and 2-9.

Others scoring for Cumberland were Wilson Bedford (9) and Timo Simmons (8), Byron Gibson (6) and Cedrick Granberry (3).

Hitting 3-pointers for CA were Bedford (3), Whitmore (2), Gibson (1) and Simmons (1).

Keaton Delaney led the Bears with 24 points, followed by Hudson Childers (11), Harley Peacock (5), Jacob Fulgham (4), Isaiah Dawson (2) and Lane Shaw (2).

Childers and Peacock hit 3-pointers.

Brownsboro won the JV contest, 50-29.

The Bears visit Van at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13. Cumberland plays host to Van at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Canton 62, Van 47

CANTON — Jaden Pickerill scored 17 points and Cason Bell and Kaden Smith each pitched in 16 points each as the Canton Eagles defeated the Van Vandals 62-47 on Tuesday in a District 16-4A basketball game.

Canton improves to 19-13 overall and 9-1 in district. The Vandals fall to 11-21 and 3-7.

Others scoring for the Eagles were Nathan Whitlock (5), Mason Huson (3), Justus Petree (2) and Tre Taylor (2).

Hitting 3-pointers were Bell (3), Smith (3), Pickerill (2) and Huson (1).

Caden Rowe led the Vandals with 17 points, followed by Kamron Jones (10), Rawly Hinch (8), Austin Moffatt (6) and Easton Hinch (6).

Hitting 3-poiners were Rowe (3), Moffatt (2), Hinch (2) and Jones (1).

Canton hosts Lindale on Friday and Van visits Cumberland in Tyler on Friday.

Grace Community 74, King’s Academy 30

Daniel Shankle hit for 16 points to lead te Grace Community Cougars to a 74-30 win over the King’s Academy Royals on Tuesday in a non-district basketball game at Galen Taylor Gymnasium.

Also scoring for the Cougars were Caden Swaim (9), McCade Stinson (9), Peyton Kelly (8), Andrew Dancy (8), Doak Porter (7), Brinton Loftis (5), Jack Crawford (5), Dustin Dossey (3), Wilson Smith (2) and Hank Gilmore (2).

Connecting on 3-pointers were Shankle (2), Dancy (2), Loftis (1), Swaim (1), Stinson (1) and Dossey (1).

Everett Hollis led the Royals with nine points. He was followed by Evan Hellwig (8), Caiden Stafford (5), Jordan Tucker (3), Travis Haft (3) and Tony Rivera (2).

Hellwig hit two 3-pointers with Stafford and Haft connecting one apiece.

Grace (19-13) returns to play on Friday, hosting Grapevine Faith Christian at 7:30 p.m.

King’s Academy (9-19) visits Longview East Texas HomeSchool at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

Dallas Covenant 53, Brook Hill 52

BULLARD — Dallas Covenant edged the Brook Hill Guard, 53-52, on Tuesday in a TAPPS 4A District 2 basketball game at Herrington Gymnasium.

Beck Langemeier led the Guard with 26 points, followed by Lex Rich (10), Kojo Kwabia (6), Osagie Aziegbe (5), Avery Ko (3) and Luke McNeel (2).

Langemeier hit four 3-pointers and Ko added one.

Everett Webb led the Knights with 13 points, followed by Luke Thomason (11), Brady Shahan (9), Ben Scott (6), Will Sperring (6), Dobson Beaird (5) and Wyatt Webb (3).

Hitting 3-pointers were E. Webb (3), Shahan (3), Scott (2), Thomason (1) and W. Wyatt (1).

Brook Hill (21-10, 8-4) will play host to Waco Vanguard at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Chapel Hill 84, Henderson 43

NEW CHAPEL HILL — The Chapel Hill Bulldogs defeated the Hendersion Lions, 84-43, on Tuesday in a District 17-4A basketball game.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 15 in the state, improved to 25-4 overall and 10-0 in district. The Lions fall to 2-28 and 0-10.

Cameron Kelley and Isaiah Mayfield had double doubles. Kelley and 16 points and 15 rebounds, along with three blocks and Mayfield ad 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Other contributors were Andrew Snoddy (16 points, 1 3-pointer), Jorden Ford (13 points, 3 3-pointers), Jordyn Bradshaw (4 points), Malik Gee (4 points), Dee Brisbon (2 points), Trevor Brooks (2 points) and Da’Marcion Blaylock (2 points).

Chapel Hill returns to play on Friday, hosting the Kilgore Bulldogs for Senior Night.

Troup 46, West Rusk 36

TROUP — Troup raced out to a 29-10 first quarter lead en route to a 46-36 win over the West Rusk Raiders on Tuesday in District 16-3A basketball.

Trae Davis led Troup (24-6, 7-3) with 23 points, followed by Jarett Castillo (6), Caden Graves (6), Carter Graves (5), Hudson Harrell (3) and Bryce McElroy (3).

Davis had three 3-pointers with one each by Caden Graves, Carter Graves, McElroy and Castillo.

Scoring for West Rusk were Marcus Castillo (11), Kemontrea McGregor (11), Montrell Giddings (6), Noah Murphy (4), Ty Harper (2) and Max Carillo (2).

Castillo, McGregor and Giddings connected on 3-pointers for West Rusk (4-17, 0-10).
