The Troup Tigers, led by a strong showing from Jamey Scruggs, is atop the leaderboard after Wednesday’s first round of the UIL Class 3A State Golf Tournament at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.

Also, Troup Lady Tiger Lauren Mekalip is tied for third in the medalist race.

The Tigers carded a 321 and are tied for first with Brock Gold. Wall is third, three strokes back of first. Crockett, led by Will Holcomb V, is fourth at 350.

The second and final round of the 36-hole event is Thursday.

Holcomb leads the medalist race after carding an even-par 72. Merkel’s Colton Hilburn and Stanton’s Benjamin Crockett are tied for second at 74.

Troup’s Scruggs and Quitman’s Jeremy Bates each fired 75s. They are tied for fourth, three strokes back of Holcomb.

Joining Scruggs on the Troup squad are Brayden Maris (T15, 79), Jake Smelser (T18, 81), Peyton Hugghins (T33, 86) and Callen Eastman (T35, 87).

In the girls tournament, Mekalip carded an 87 and is joined in third by four other golfers. Holly Sparks, of Sonora, leads at 83, while Rockdale’s Lyndy Laurell is second with an 85.

Arp’s Gracie Greer, who carded a 96, is tied for 21st.

In the team race, the Sabine Lady Cardinals carded a 422. They were led by Bailey Whatley’s 97. Other Sabine scores were: Shelby Burns (103), Destiny Bobo (108) and Kylie Crowley (114). Brookelyn Gray had a no card.
