Smith County man, 32, charged with assault, possession after brief standoff

A 32-year-old Smith County man faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance after a standoff in southeastern Smith County.
Michael Gabrial Greenlee was arrested Monday after law enforcement officers were called out to the 10700 block of Hancock Drive off Texas Highway 110.

Dispatchers had received a call about a man who got into a dispute with a construction worker and fired a shot into the ground after pointing the weapon in the direction of the worker. The shooter then retreated into a house.
The Sheriff’s Office activated its SWAT team along with three members of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s SWAT team.
Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said a negotiator talked the suspect into coming out of his house and he was taken into custody.
The whole situation lasted about two hours, with the active negotiation lasting 10 to 15 minutes, Smith said. No one was injured.
A woman, who is believed to be the suspect’s mother, was also in the house, but was not involved in the situation.
Law enforcement officials recovered a rifle and shotgun from the house after executing a search warrant.

Smith said the Sheriff’s Office has had a lot of calls to that house, but he declined to go into specifics about the nature of those calls.
Greenlee was charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal in June 2015.
