Three East Texans dead after fatal wreck on Saturday night

Three people are dead after a four-vehicle wreck on Loop 49 in Smith County, five miles west of Tyler, on Saturday night.

According to a press release by the Texas Department of Public Safety, at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, troopers responded to the four-vehicle crash.



Preliminary crash investigation revealed that a 2011 Ford Edge was traveling southbound on SL-49 behind a Freightliner truck when the driver attempted to go around the truck in a no-passing zone.

While attempting to go around the truck, the driver of the Edge struck the left side of a 2009 Mercedes 3900 traveling northbound before striking a 2014 Ford C-Max that was traveling behind the Mercedes.

The driver of the Ford Edge, Karol Ann Rank, 77 years old of Tyler, and passenger, Ted Rank, 87 years old of Tyler, were both taken to ETMC in Tyler and pronounced dead by Judge James Meredith.

The driver of the Ford C-Max, Skyler Todd Harper, 34 years old of Lindale, was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Gary Alfred.

The drivers of the Mercedes C300 and the Freightliner were both treated and released at the scene.
