Tyler Legacy’s Jadin Hambrick jumps against Wylie’s Kamsi Ikegbunam to start Monday’s Class 6A playoff game in Mabank.

MABANK — Jackson Rogers hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left, and Tyler Legacy missed two free throws with 2.2 seconds on the clock as Wylie escaped with a 43-42 win over the Red Raiders in Class 6A bi-district basketball action on Monday night.

“It was a disappointing finish,” first-year Legacy head boys basketball coach Kyle Smith said. “Obviously, that was our game to lose. We weren’t quite ready for the moment. Too many mistakes piled on top of each other to beat a quality team.

“I am proud of the way our guys came out and fought and believed they deserved to be here and be in the game. I thought they did a great job of executing. Our defensive gameplan, not sure what 23 (Noah Mallory) had, but it was way under his average. We just sputtered offensively and couldn’t make shots. We got some good looks that we’ve been making, but for whatever reason, we didn’t make them tonight. But we will look back on this one as we build this program, and we will be better because of it. We can kind of look back on this to being the start of believing we belong.”

After Rogers’ 3-pointer gave the Pirates the lead, the Red Raiders came down and ran an offensive set. Jayden Jones shot a leaning jumper from the left side that was no good, but Luke Anderson grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining. Both free throws were missed, and the Red Raiders couldn’t grab the loose ball in time for a putback attempt, advancing Wylie to the next round of the playoffs.

Trailing 7-4 early after a three by Wylie’s Isaiah Shurn, Legacy went on a 6-0 run with two free throws by Ja’Corian Oes, a jumper by Gage Nuckolls and a baseline drive by Jones to take a 10-7 lead. When the Red Raiders went up 8-7 with 2:10 left in the first quarter, they led the rest of the way until Rogers’ triple in the final minute.

The Red Raiders extended their lead to 19-10 early in the second quarter thanks to a corner three by Anderson and a putback by Anderson. Wylie came back and cut the score to 21-17, but Legacy ended the half on a 9-0 run to lead 30-17 at halftime.

With the Red Raiders up 36-25 midway through the third quarter, Wylie ended the quarter with a 7-2 spurt to cut the score to 38-32 after three quarters.

Legacy went without a field goal for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. A reverse layup by Tosin Aiyejuto cut the score to 39-36 with 4:40 remaining and the score remained the same until Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner off of a skip pass from the opposite block by Oes to put the score at 42-36 with 2:45 to play.

Kamsi Ikegbunam had a putback with 2:14 left and then a drive by Josh Spindle with 55 seconds on the clock trimmed the score to 42-40. Legacy turned the ball over trying to get the ball down the court, and Rogers then hit the game-winner.

Nuckolls, who is the lone Red Raider who had previous playoff experience last year at Bullard, led Legacy (17-16) with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Oes had 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Anderson had 10 points. Jones scored 5 points. Jaylon Miles and JP Rainer each had 2, and Jadin Hambrick added 1.

It was the final high school game for Legacy seniors Anderson, Hambrick, Kaden Lee and Christian Lemons.

The Red Raiders were in the playoffs for the first time since 2021 and second time since 2015. They were looking for the program’s first postseason victory since 2007.

Shurn led Wylie with 11 points off the bench. Mallory, who came in averaging more than 24 points per game, had 9 points. Rogers scored 7 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kamsi Ikegbunam had 6 points and 12 rebounds.

Wylie (23-9) advances to face Mansfield Lake Ridge in the area round.
