The Tyler Fire Department will soon add two new burn buildings for firefighter training.
Class A Burn Buildings allow firefighters to train in realistic conditions, experiencing the smoke, heat and fire growth they may encounter in real emergencies. These fires involve wood and other common materials. Making them some of the most frequent fire threats in Tyler, according to a press release from the city.
The city council approved purchasing the portable buildings from Lone Star Tactical Buildings for $129,713 on March 12.
The new structures will feature a two-chamber design. One side will simulate the intense heat and smoke of a burning room, while the other will show how a fire starts and spreads.
Currently, the fire department has one Class A Burn Building. The state requires firefighters to train with at least two Class A fires, so Tyler crews have been traveling outside the city to meet the standard.
The new buildings will be placed at the department’s training facility at 701 Fair Park Dr. Because they are portable, they can be relocated if needed.
