A home in Smith County is a total loss after a fire swept through the house Sunday morning in the 10100 block of County Road 21 in the New Chapel Hill area.

The fire was likely caused by an unextinguished citronella candle in a trash can, according to Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson. The homeowner managed to escape the home. The Red Cross was contacted to determine whether any assistance could be provided.
