Another Tyler mosquito sample tests positive for West Nile

The city of Tyler Mosquito Control has confirmed another mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile in Tyler.
Officials said the batch of mosquitoes were taken from the 7000 block of Gatewood Drive on Aug. 30, and results were received Wednesday. This is the fourth location around Tyler to have mosquito samples test positive for the disease.

Other samples that tested positive for West Nile were pulled from 3000 block of Terilinga Drive, the 1400 block of Kidd Drive and the 4800 block of Donnybrook Drive. All areas have been treated.
Officials said the area around Gatewood Drive was treated on Aug. 31, Sept. 2 and again Wednesday, and Mosquito Control staff were conducting door-to-door campaign to inform and educate residents in the area about the virus and preventative measures.
Tyler Mosquito Control treats standing water with larvicide and insect growth regulator tablets and fogs. Officials said the department will continue these treatments for the remainder of mosquito season.
“(Tyler Mosquito Control) conducts weekly identification and arboviral testing throughout the city,” Chris Lennon, Code Enforcement manager, said. “With the data provided from those tests, Tyler Mosquito Control implements the appropriate preventative measures to help reduce the mosquito population within the city.”
TIPS FOR MOSQUITO PREVENTION
• Deet: Use insect repellent while outdoors at all times to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and other insects.

• Dress: Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing – including pants and long sleeves.
• Drain: Drain all standing water in and around the home and office.
• Dusk and Dawn: Limit outdoor activities during the dusk and dawn hours as mosquitoes are most active during those times.
