Apaches blank Jefferson

The No. 2-ranked Tyler Junior College Apaches scored a 4-0 victory over No. 12 Jefferson (Missouri) Friday night at Pat Hartley Field.
The Apaches improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Vikings fall to 1-2.
“I thought our defense did a good job,” TJC coach Steve Clements said. “We are headed in the right direction, but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
Yazeed Matthews, a sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, led the Apaches with two goals.
Matthews scored his first goal off an assist from Paul Odendahl, a freshman from Meersbusch, Germany, in the 32nd minute of the first half.
TJC led 1-0 until the 38th minute of the second half when Rooby Dalusma, a sophomore from Douglasville, Georgia, scored on a rebound off the Vikings’ keeper.
Ten minutes later Matthews scored his second goal. Dalusma assisted.
The Apaches’ fourth goal was from Eric Cruz, a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia. Odendahl assisted.
William Diaz, a sophomore from Vancouver, British Columbia, had the third clean sheet, the third shutout for the Apaches.
TJC had 14 shots, including seven shots on a goal. The Vikings had four shots. Both teams had three cornerkicks.
The Apaches now head to south Texas for a couple of Region XIV conference games – 1 p.m. Sept. 9 against Coastal Bend College in Beeville and 1 p.m. Sept. 10 against Laredo Community College in Laredo.
TJC’s next home game is Sept. 16 against Northeast Texas Community College.
