The shelves are stacked and bargain books await shoppers at the Smith County Medical Society Alliance annual Fall Book Fair.

With thousands of volumes available in a variety of genres, the sale opened Thursday and continues 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Book Sale warehouse, 2004 Broussard St. in Tyler.

Most of the books, both hardback and paperback, are less than $5, with many ringing the cash register at $1 or $2 each.

The annual spring and fall book fairs started in 1968 and are the primary fundraisers for the Medical Society Alliance.

Fully three quarters of the net proceeds from the sales go directly to finance health care profession scholarships for students attending Tyler Junior College and The University of Texas at Tyler.

All sales are final and only cash or check is accepted.

The next chance to catch a deal is at the Spring Book Fair, set for April 6 to 8.
