1. Live Coverage: Mourners gather to honor life of Kayla Gomez-Orozco

Kayla Gomez-Orozco is now at peace.

To commemorate her life and ongoing memory, efforts are underway to raise money to place a living tree and plaque in the Children’s Park of Tyler.

The park honors children who left the world too soon and their grieving parents.  It is both an active place where they can play and a place for quiet meditation.

City of Tyler employees are working to raise $2,500 to pay for a tree and plaque to be placed in the space.

The effort is organized through the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College Avenue.

“We want the tree to be a gift from the employees and people inside the city limits to show (the family) we care about her, and we want her to be remembered,” said Brenda Choy, a circulation technician who came up with the idea.

Kayla’s family has been notified and wants to be a part of picking the tree and the verbiage on the plaque.

City employees had a tentative idea to pick a tree that blooms pink or purple flowers, since the little girl’s favorite color was pink.

Cash or check donation may be made in person at the library. Checks should be made out to the city of Tyler, but have a memo noting its purpose for the tree.

The Children’s Park also is accepting donations toward a memorial for Kayla’s family. 

“It will provide a peaceful place for her family and friends to come to remember and celebrate her life,” a flyer about the project read.
