The community is mourning the lost of three former Winona residents who died in a car wreck Tuesday after moving to  Junction City, Kansas, a little over a month ago.

Jessica Thompson, 26, her daughter, Leah Thompson, 5, and son, Jaydon Thompson, 6, were traveling inside a Ford truck when the vehicle was struck by the driver of a truck who crossed the median, according to a preliminary crash report by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The family is survived by Joey Thompson, Jessica Thompson’s husband and the father of her two children, who was not in the vehicle. 

According to the report, both vehicles came to rest in a ditch, and Jessica and Leah died soon after the crash. Jaydon, was flown to a hospital in Wichita and later died from his injuries.

The driver of the truck, Steven Johnson, 42, of Houston, did not sustain any injuries that were life threatening and was taken to Geary County Jail. He is currently facing pending charges of driving under the influence and three charges of involuntary manslaughter, according to Kansas Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Ben Gardner.

Since the news, a GoFundMe account has been set up to pay for the expenses of bringing them back to Texas for funeral and burial arrangements.

There also has been an outpouring of prayer and support for Joey Thompson, who lost his wife and both children in the crash.

“We are very devastated and shocked at this tragic incident, and it’ll be a long road ahead of us,” Justina Allison, Joey’s cousin said.

She added that the family had only been in Junction City for several weeks. The family is asking for prayer and is thankful for the support they have received.

“Please keep the father and husband, Joey Thompson (in your) thoughts and prayers as he goes through this tragic time of loosing his family,” she said.
