Bullard man dies after beating with baseball bat

A Bullard man hospitalized after being beaten with a baseball bat on Friday died early Saturday morning as a result of those injuries.

The victim, identified by law enforcement officials as Bias Lott, was hospitalized after an early morning attack during which he was beaten with the bat by James Bales.



Bales were originally charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, but the Smith County Sheriff’s office expects the charges to be upgraded to Murder on Monday. An autopsy has been ordered.

According to reports from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and members of the Crime Scene Unit responded to what was initially reported as a disturbance between two men that occurred at 4 a.m. Friday in the 22000 block of Lakeway Harbor Dr. in Bullard.

After assessing the situation, Bales was arrested and charged with assault.

The Sheriff’s office reported that the altercation resulted in one of the men, Lott, being hit multiple times in the head with a baseball bat.

Lott was subsequently transported to a Tyler hospital with life threatening injuries. He underwent surgery for his injuries, according to reports.

For the aggravated assault charges, Bales bond was set at $200,000 by 114th State District Judge Christi Kennedy.

UPDATE: Early Friday morning, Bias Lott died due to injuries he received as a result of being attacked with a baseball bat by James Bales. A Bullard man is in the hospital after an early morning attack. According to a news release form Sheriff Larry Smith, deputies and members of the Crime Scene Unit responded to what was initially reported as a disturbance between two men in the 22000 block of Lakeway Harbor Dr in Bullard, at 4 a.m. After assessing the situation, one man, James Bales, was arrested and charged with assault.

The Sheriff’s office said that the altercation resulted in one of the men being hit multiple times in the head with a baseball bat.
