GILMER —The Gilmer Buckeyes will receive rings in honor of their 2014 state football championship at a 7 p.m. ceremony Saturday at the Gilmer Civic Center.

Jeff Traylor, the Buckeyes’ head coach when they won the title in December before he accepted a job as an assistant football coach at the University of Texas, will be keynote speaker.

Also scheduled to speak are U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tyler) and new Gilmer head coach Matt Turner, who was an assistant football coach at the school for the past 12 seasons.

The ceremony will feature a highlight reel from the 2014 season and a video tribute to coaches, said Gilmer school board president Jeff Rash. The latter will feature former Buckeye players from as far back as the early 1960s, he said.

Undefeated Gilmer won the Class 4A Division II state title by nipping West Orange-Stark, 35-25, in Arlington on Dec. 19 after trailing 25-7 at halftime. It was Gilmer’s third state title and fifth state championship game appearance under Traylor in his 15 seasons as head coach of his alma mater.

At Saturday’s ceremony, Rash will interview the players for live local cable television and a live Internet stream as they enter the civic center on a red carpet. That will be telecast on Etex Telephone cable channel 2 and streamed throughout the world on www.gilmerbuckeyes.com/livestream, Rash said.

The rings were funded by private donations and no school funds were used, he added.

Sponsoring the event are Mike Craig Ford, the Goudarzi and Young law firm, and Gilmer National Bank.
