Ph.D. student Veronica Berns wrote her thesis at the University of Wisconsin.

She was proud of her work, but her family didn’t grasp what she had done. Neither would most people. Speaking of her thesis, she said, “We took the output of these density functional theory calculations and turned them into these visualizable pressures that we could use to link the simple calcium copper 5 type to the more complicated sci-type quasi crystal.”

So, she created a graphic novel, or comic book, to explain her thesis.

She asked for financial support on Kickstarter and received twice the amount for which she had asked.
