Tyler Firefighter Travis Milligan dies after sudden illness

TYLER (KYTX) – Tyler Firefighters are mourning the loss of one of their own. Firefighter Travis Milligan experienced a sudden illness while at his home on Friday. He was transported to a local hospital, where he passed away the following day.

Milligan, 32, was hired by the department in November 2008. He was named the 2010 Firefighter of the Year and was a well-respected and valuable member of the Tyler Fire Department.



According to Tyler Fire Chief Tim Johnson, “Travis was truly one of the best. Although he was with us for only a short time, he leaves behind a lasting legacy of service to this community.”

Prior to his time in Tyler, Firefighter Milligan served the City of Terrell as a firefighter from April 2007 – November 2008.

Milligan worked out of Fire Station #6 for most of his career and is well known for his caring attitude and desire to help others. According to his Captain, Kenneth Scheid, “Travis was a man that genuinely cared about others.” Tyler Professional Fire Fighters Association President Tony Gumber stated, “Travis was a longtime member of the TPFFA, and we are proud of all his accomplishments during his time with the Tyler Fire Department. He will truly be missed.”

Even during this tragic situation, Firefighter Milligan continues to help others. He was a registered organ donor and, as a result, numerous other people will receive the gift of life because of his selflessness.

Milligan is survived by his wife Erin and his 18 month old daughter Rori, along with his parents, his siblings, and his extended firefighting family. Arrangements are pending at this time.
