The Smith County Commissioners Court will decide whether to move forward with countywide voting centers Tuesday morning.

The decision will be made in the court’s weekly meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the Smith County Courthouse Annex Building, 200 E. Ferguson St., in Downtown Tyler.

If approved, the court would authorize the elections department submit an application to the Texas Secretary of State for enrollment in the program.

If approved by the state, Smith County voters would be able to cast their ballot at one of 33 proposed poling locations on Election Day, instead of having to go to their specific precinct. The hope is the program will make voting easier and increase turnout.

The court will also consider putting seven county vehicles on the auction block. The list includes six 2007 Chevy Impalas and one 2006 Chevy Silverado.

The court will deliberate on three other purchasing items including an agreement with Touch Pay for kiosk services at the Smith County Jail, as well as an agreement to replace an air conditioning unit in the EOC building data room and approval to purchase water filtration systems for county employees.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is also requesting approval to renew a provisional salvage yard license for its auto parts warehouse on Greenbrier Road.

In executive session, the board will consider making changes to policies to comply with the recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. Items for consideration include the county’s wellness program, health plan and the employee handbook.
