Former district judge comments on Calvert trial

TYLER (KYTX)- Day 2 in the Calvert trial was a slow day, but for Cynthia Stevens Kent, a Smith County District Judge for years, she knows why this is happening.
“People sometimes get a little anxious, why are they being so patient, it’s because they are doing their job,” Kent said.
Kent has been in the courtroom during the trial. Calvert objected to nearly every question asked by the prosecution as they talked with witnesses such as Calvert’s first wife, Texas Ranger Brent Davis and Sergeant Jack Lanier in charge of courthouse security.
“Most attorneys are going to be judicious in what they object to, how many times they object because a jury is going to get tired of hearing objections,” Kent said.
That has not been the case with Calvert. District Attorney Matt Bingham attempted to introduce 75 crime scene photos into evidence. Calvert objected to every photo, making a small task last over an hour. Neither Bingham nor Judge Jack Skeen Jr. have lost their tempers.
“It’s important for the people in our community to recognize Judge Skeen has been extremely patient, thoughtful, and careful. That’s what you want a judge to do,” Kent said.
Calvert’s first wife was called to testify. She detailed a close relationship with Calvert’s ex-wife and victim Jelena Sriraman and testified that both women feared Calvert. She said, “When I found out what happened, there was no doubt in my mind. I knew James had killed her.”
Judge Kent says even when a verdict is reached, this trial won’t be over.
“There will be years of appeals, multiple judges and lawyers making sure this was done properly,” Kent said.
