A look at DUI crash numbers across Texas

TYLER (KYTX)-Crash, after crash, after crash. Drunk driving is all too common across the country and especially here in Texas.
“Unfortunately Texas holds the distinction and has for many years of being the number 1 state for drunk driving fatalities with over 1300 last year,” Leslie Watson with Mothers Against Drunk Driving said.

That’s a distinction Watson isn’t proud of and one she’s working to change.
In 2014, Tyler had 39 alcohol related crashes with injuries. Longview had 43. We looked at numbers for cities with similar populations. Allen had 20, League city: 13, Lewisville: 56, Odessa: 87, Richardson: 34, Pearland: 12, Round Rock: 37, San Angelo: 43, Sugar Land: 21, Wichita Falls: 38.
Those are all numbers Watson wants to reduce. She says one way is stricter legislation.
“One of the best tactics to use is sobriety checkpoints. 42 states have them, Texas of course is not one of those states,” Watson said.
Texas does have no refusal weekends and we will start seeing more of those as we near the holiday season. Officer Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department wants people to think twice before driving drunk.
“It’s one of those messages we have to keep preaching and people just don’t learn and it’s so simple just not to get behind the wheel,” Martin said.

Last year, 10 people died in Smith County as a result of drunk driving crashes. 6 people died in Gregg County and Watson says it looks like 2015 will be a bad year for drunk driving deaths as well.
