Baseball Notebook: Tyler Legacy’s Cooper Moore, Brook Hill’s Ben Braatz earn weekly honors

Tyler Legacy’s Cooper Moore and Brook Hill’s Ben Braatz have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played March 4-9.

Moore was chosen as the Hitter of the Week, while Braatz was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.



Tyler Legacy’s Cooper Moore went 6-for-14 (.429) with a home run, a triple, a double, four RBIs, three runs, three walks and two stolen bases as the Red Raiders went 3-0-2 at the Integra Classic in Nacogdoches and Lufkin.

Moore also pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Braatz struck out 11 batters, allowing no earned runs on two hits with no walks in seven innings in a win over Pantego Christian.

PITCHING

Tyler Legacy’s Calvin Rippy allowed no earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and five walks in seven innings, picking up a win.

Van sophomore Braiden Payton pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk against Dallas Sunset.

Big Sandy’s Tyson Tapley allowed no earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks in four innings of a win against rival Hawkins.

Harmony’s Will Young allowed no runs on one hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Ollie Trimble struck out one batter and threw just 29 pitches in five innings. Haden Johnson allowed one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks in five innings.

HITTING

Tyler Legacy’s Cale Zips went 6-for-15 (.400) a double, three RBIs, five runs, a walk and two stolen bases.

Van’s Landon Smith went 8-for-16 (.500) with two triples, five RBIs, seven runs, two hit by pitches and five stolen bases.

Harmony’s Riley Patterson went 5-for-13 (.385) with a home run, 1 triple, two doubles and 10 RBIs.

Overton’s Brody Brown went 5-for-7 (.714) with a double, two RBIs, four runs, a walk and two stolen bases.

Rains’ Shawn Robertson went 6-for-13 (.462) with two triples, two RBIs, six runs, four walks and four stolen bases.

East Texas teams ranked in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association rankings are Whitehouse (11-4) No. 10 in 5A; Texarkana Liberty-Eylau (10-3) No. 3 and Bullard (14-1) No. 4 in 4A; Central Heights (12-1) No. 5 in 3A; and Harleton (8-1) No. 1 and Garrison (9-6) No. 4 in 2A. Also receiving votes were Canton and Texarkana Pleasant Grove in 4A; Rains in 3A; and Groveton in 2A.

East Texas teams ranked in the txhighschoolbaseball.com rankings are Whitehouse No. 6 and Hallsville No. 12 in 5A; Bullard No. 4, Liberty-Eylau No. 7, Pleasant Grove No. 10, Spring Hill No. 12, Van No. 14 and Hudson No. 15 in 4A; Central Heights No. 5, Harmony No. 12, Rains No. 15, Edgewood No. 20, Diboll No. 22 and New Diana No. 24 in 3A.
