LONGVIEW – Arp had upset on its mind, but Waskom running back Chan Amie had other plans.

Amie rushed for 200 yards and scored four touchdowns on 29 carries to lead Waskom to a 35-18 win over Arp on cool and rainy Friday in a Class 3A Division II regional playoff game at Pine Tree Pirate Stadium.

Waskom (13-0), the defending state champion, moves on to meet another District 8-3A foe in West Rusk in the state quarterfinals next week. The contest is tentatively set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lobo Stadium in Longview. West Rusk (12-1) defeated Omaha Paul Pewitt 31-12 Thursday.

Arp, also in District 8-3A with Waskom and West Rusk, ends its season at 7-6. The loss also snapped a Tigers’ six-game winning streak.

“I thought Arp had a great scheme,” Waskom coach Whitney Keeling said. “It was a tough hard-fought game for us, but our guys executed well and that led to us winning.”

Even in defeat, Arp Tigers coach Dale Irwin considered the Tigers’ season a success.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group of young men that we had,” Irwin said. “We are graduating five seniors but I like the legacy that they left … They showed these men behind them that you can be down but not out. I love how we played toward the end of the season it showed a lot of character of what this team is about.”

The Tigers began the season 1-5 before reeling off four straight wins to make the playoffs and then score two playoff victories.

Waskom got going early, taking a 7-0 lead after converting on fourth-and-7 at the Wildcats’ own 45. Amie broke free on a 55-yard TD run on the play. Victor Tapia booted the PAT and the Wildcats were ahead with 10:58 on the clock in the first quarter.

Arp responded immediately. Kayce Medlock tossed an 8-yard TD pass to Kaleb Cabello with 8:05 to go in the first quarter. The try for two failed to leave Waskom leading 7-6. The TD was set up by Isaiah Baker’s 52-yard dash.

With 9:36 on the clock in the second quarter, Amie put his team up by 14-6. Amie scored on a 2-yard run and Tapia added the PAT.

Once again the Tigers battled back. Arp quarterback Taylor Stewart completed a 47-yard pass to Jacob Birdsong, who was tackled at the Waskom 2. On the next play, Medlock scored. The two-point conversion attempt failed and Waskom led 14-12 with 2:16 left before halftime.

Arp gained the lead in the beginning of the third quarter after Medlock’s second score of the night, a 41-yard TD run. The Tigers led 18-14 with 9:15 left in the third.

But from there things went south for Arp as the Tigers committed a costly fumble and Waskom took full advantage and reeled off 21 unanswered points. Two of their final three scores came from Amie who scored on a 13-yard run and a 1-yard plunge.

QB Dylan Harkrider scored on a 1-yard sneak as well.

“We wanted to put it in Chan’s gut and ride him to victory,” Keeling said. “He’s a tough, pretty good football player.”
