Beckville used an old-fashion attack in this day of spread offenses to advance in the playoffs.
Jacari Reed took care of the middle while Rahmon Mitchell took care of the outside as the Bearcats scored a 49-20 upset win over No. 5 Alto in a Class 2A Division I area matchup at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Friday night.
Beckville (11-1) advances to meet Lovelady (12-0), a 42-6 winner over San Augustine in Whitehouse, next week.
Alto ends its successful but trying season at 11-1.
It was a season dedicated to fallen teammate Cam’Ron Matthews who passed away midway through the season.
Normally it is Alto that is putting up the dazzling numbers, but this time it was Beckville. The Yellowjackets were hurt with three lost fumbles and an interception.
Reed was the muscle man, carrying 24 times for 187 yards and a TD on Earl Campbell Field. Mitchell added 107 yards and two TDs, also on 24 carries. Reed also had a two-point conversion.
Sophomore quarterback Trey Lindsey scored three TDs on runs of 12, 2 and 1 and also tossed two touchdown passes – eight yards to Jake Smith and 36 yards to Mitchell.
Reed recovered two fumbles, while Mitchell got one. Zach Collins added an interception.
Alto standout QB Kennen Johnson rushed for 218 yards and a TD on 21 attempts. He scored on a 66-yard run. He also tossed a 30-yard TD pass to Mikkah Hackett.
Nick Pope had the other Alto TD on a 20-yard dash.
The Bearcat offensive line of James Nixon, Robert Baker, Ty Jones, Brandon Campos and Brandt Harris, along others paved the way for the running backs.
Alto’s Jake Flowers had two blocked passes.
