GEORGETOWN – No. 6 John Tyler is on to the Championship Bracket at the Jack Frost Invitational.

The Lady Lions shook off a slow start to dispatch The Woodlands College Park 50-30 in their final pool-play game on Friday.

After taking down two Class 6A opponents, John Tyler (9-0) will play Class 5A No. 23 Georgetown (7-5) in the tournament semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Ashtyn Beal and Destini Whitehead scored 15 apiece to lead the Lady Lions, who beat 6A No. 18 Austin Westlake (56-52, OT) and 5A Hutto (84-25) in group play on Thursday. Alyssa Mayfield added 11 points for JT.

College Park opened a 12-5 lead after one quarter but JT quickly erased that with a 21-7 second quarter. The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Cavaliers 45-18 after the first quarter.

“Today was a little bit slow getting started but took care of business finally in the last three quarters,” JT coach Mike Smith said. “Now it’s a matter of getting ready to play in an elite bracket with some really good teams. It’s going to be good for us.”

Joining JT and Georgetown in the semifinals are Argyle and Cibolo Steele. All three possible JT opponents have state championship pedigree.

The Lady Lions played the Georgetown Lady Eagles last year during pool play of this tournament, with the hosts winning 56-46 thanks to hitting 22 of 32 free throw attempts. The Lady Eagles went on to the state quarterfinals last season.

“Georgetown’s always going to have a good basketball team,” Smith said. “They’re deep in tradition and they’ve been state champions. Last year it was a 10-point game. We feel like we’ve improved some and hopefully we’ll give them all they can handle and come away with a victory.

“I’m proud of the girls for putting in the work and getting us there.”
