LINDALE — Lindale got behind 4-0 in the first inning but battled back to force extra innings, ultimately winning in walk-off fashion 6-5 over New Diana in nine innings.
“I’m proud of the way we responded,” Lindale head baseball coach Rich Sanguinetti said. “Hudson (LeGrow) gave up three free bases in the first inning, and all three came in to score. We were kind of battling uphill. I was proud of the way Hudson got back on the mound and got after it.”
After giving up five runs in the first 1.1 innings as Lindale faced a 5-1 deficit, LeGrow retired the final 17 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the top of the seventh inning.
“If it wasn’t for pitch count, we would’ve left him in there,” Sanguinetti said. “That’s why he’s our go-to guy. And then we went to little brother in the eighth and ninth.”
New Diana loaded the bases on Jackson LeGrow in the top of the eighth, but he made a standout play on a comebacker to get the third out and keep the game tied. He then retired the first two batters of the ninth before allowing a two-out single to Keaton Bogue, who was then caught trying to steal second base.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kaden Fleming walked, and Caleb Hart was hit by a pitch. After Jake Powell struck out looking, Jake Curbow hit the ball to second, and the ball was thrown away, allowing courtesy runner Colby Myers to score the winning run from second base.
“It wasn’t pretty, but these are the wins that kind of pull you in the right direction, just trying to find a way to win those games,” Sanguinetti said. “I thought we put together a lot of good at-bats. We found a way to win. That’s what I told the kids. The goal at the end of the day is to go 1-0, and we found a way to do that.”
New Diana used a two-run single by Remi Rountree and an RBI double by Colt McDowell to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. A groundout by Mason Sherman pushed the score to 4-0.
Lindale got a run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Curbow.
New Diana added to its lead in the top of the second. Levi Green doubled and scored on a passed ball. That was the last baserunner for New Diana against Hudson LeGrow.
Lindale got three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jackson Parker had an RBI single, and another run scored on an errant throw. Kaden Fleming drove in a run with a groundout to cut the score to 5-4, which remained the score until the fifth inning when an error in right field allowed Jake Powell to reach base and score on a Carson Plunkett groundout.
Hudson LeGrow allowed three earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. Jackson LeGrow allowed two hits with a strikeout and a walk in two innings to pick up the win.
Fleming and Powell both had two hits. Hart, Powell and Fleming all had a double.
McDowell started on the mound for New Diana and allowed three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings. Canon Willeford took the loss.
Lindale (7-5-2) will host Wills Point at 7 p.m. Friday.
