Many wonderful people work together to help children

On behalf of the many attorneys who represent children (some with no compensation) I thank Sam George for his kind words in his recent letter to the paper. It is encouraging to read the thoughts of a fellow attorney who has a great wealth of experience.

I would also like to thank the Tyler Paper for publishing a positive item about some of the good things that happen in our community. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the many people who have passed through the legal system that have inspired me.

I have witnessed amazing acts of unconditional love from parents who have acknowledged their problems and put the needs of their children above their own. Some take advantage of assistance and return to healthy and safe parenting of their children. Others have realized that the trauma was too great and have chosen to let other family members, or friends of the family, parent their children.

I have also witnessed foster families step up and provide forever homes when no one else either could or would. Some people think that foster parents are only concerned about the money they are given by the system, but I have met numerous foster families whose hearts were motivated by their commitment to keep children from being institutionalized. They treat foster children just like they were biological children.

And then there are those who graciously open up their homes to the most traumatized children and provide them with a safe place to heal before they are transitioned to a forever home. These remarkable people not only help children but they also mentor the adoptive families.

Their efforts make it possible for appropriate biological family members to participate in the adoption process.

And I have known numerous CPS caseworkers who have been unfairly subjected to vitriolic attacks on their character and motivations and have responded with concern and grace in a professional manner.

One of my heroes is a CPS supervisor who lost her biological child many years ago in a car accident and has graciously been able to provide guidance and inspiration to me and many others.

None of these people will likely receive recognition for the wonderful things they have done and are doing.

But they aren’t doing it for the recognition. We as a community are surrounded by these angels whose lives quietly make us better. We should all pray for their continued commitment to blessing the lives of those who are in the most need.

LAW

To those calling the Supreme Court decision on Obergefell v. Hodges the “law of the land,” I must disagree. Section 2 of Article III of the Constitution states, “the judicial power shall extend to all cases in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, etc.”

There is no provision in the Constitution for marriage. Therefore, this decision was not based on the Constitution, neither was it based on God’s Word.

What is happening now to those who refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of their Christian beliefs could be an analogy to the prophecy in the book of Revelation where it is called “the mark of the Beast.” The Beast being an anti-Christian organization whereby, if you do not side with them, you will not be allowed to buy or sell.
