Two UT Tyler tennis players and a golfer received Player of the Week Honors from the American Southwest Conference for their performances the week of March 22-27.

Brittany Trich, a senior from Longview, was named the Co-Female Tennis Player of the Week for the East Division, while Rob Hodous, a freshman from Fayetteville, Ark., was tabbed the Male Tennis Player of the Week for the East.

In golf, Matt Stephens, a senior from Mont Belvieu, was selected the Male Golf of the Week for the East.

Trich, who played at Longview High School and LeTourneau University before transferring to UT Tyler, compiled a record of 3-0 record at No. 5 singles against regionally ranked Whitman (Walla Walla, Wash.), Hardin-Simmons (Abilene) and nationally ranked Trinity (San Antonio). The matches were played at the Summers Tennis Center on the UT Tyler campus. Her 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) victory against Trinity gave the Patriots a 5-4 team win. It was also the highest-ranked team UT Tyler has topped in program history.

Hodous, a graduate of Fayetteville High School, was 3-0 at No. 6 singles against Linfield (McMinnville, Ore.), Hardin-Simmons and nationally ranked Trinity. Against Trinity, he battled back for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 win. He also teamed with Kevin Wright for a pair of No. 2 doubles victories.

The tennis teams are on an eastern swing through Louisiana and Mississippi this weekend. Today, the teams are playing in Pineville, La. The women have two matches — 11:30 a.m. vs. Huntingdon (Montgomery, Ala.) and at 2:30 p.m. vs. Louisiana College. The men play at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, both Patriot teams will play two matches — 10 a.m. vs. Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., and later that afternoon vs. Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.

The Louisiana College and Mississippi College matches are ASC matches.

The Patriot women are 8-4 overall and 1-0 in ASC play, while the Patriot men are 7-5 and 1-0.

In golf, Stephens won medalist honors and helped his team capture the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Tournament at The Golf Club at StoneBridge on Tuesday in Bossier City, La.

Stephens, a transfer from Lamar University, carded a 3-under 141 (67-74).

It is the second straight week for Stephens to take the weekly ASC honor. The Patriots won the team championship by seven strokes. His opening-round was a tournament low and one of just two under 70 in the field of 57 golfers.

The Patriots are scheduled to compete in the LeTourneau Spring Invitational beginning Monday at Pinecrest Country Club in Longview. The tourney concludes on Tuesday. The Patriot women, who also won the Hal Sutton Tournament, will compete in the tourney as well.
