Fantasy football: Some bye week suggestions

Published 7:47 pm Thursday, October 18, 2012

It’s amazing how fast a week can turn for and against an owner in fantasy football. There I was with the Last Action Heroes sporting a 63-point lead over the Goodfellas, but the latter still had three players left to go on Monday Night Football.

There is a commercial for MNF where the owner starts celebrating at the office on Monday, believing he had a game won. Then his co-worker/opponent walks by him and puts up two fingers mouthing the words, “Two more players.”

What happens?

The other guy’s players go off on Monday night and the dude who counted his chickens is stuck watching it unfold.

So even though I had a 63-point lead, I did not feel good heading into Monday. The Goodfellas had Antonio Gates, Phillip Rivers and Ryan Matthews — basically the San Diego Chargers’ top three players — left against the Denver Broncos.

I decided not to watch, but eventually I turned over to ESPN around the end of the first half and couldn’t believe it.

Gates had scored two touchdowns, which also means Rivers had two touchdowns with the all-important quarterback-receiver/tight end hookup. Twenty four points, just like that. Also, Gates was nearing 100 yards in receiving, which would give him another bonus in our league. My only saving grace was Matthews had yet to get going, but San Diego still had the second half to go.

My lead had shrunk to 31 points and admittedly I was nervous.

Rivers’ passing yards increased in the second half and Matthews began to find his rhythm. My only saving grace was Rivers losing a fumble (-1 in our league), but still with Matthews and Gates nearing 100-yard days, it wouldn’t matter.

The Goodfellas were going to win.

I began secretly cursing Kyle Rudolph, who had been called for a penalty Sunday afternoon to negate a touchdown by my running back, Adrian Peterson. Also my defense, the N.Y. Jets, had two defensive touchdowns brought back because of penalties.

But as soon as the Goodfellas were nearing a comeback for the ages, Rivers threw his second interception.

Then his third.

Then his fourth.

The Heroes survived and ultimately won comfortably to move to 3-3.

What to do about bye weeks?

The fantasy football season is nearing the midpoint, which for many owners out there means bye weeks.

Yes, it is that wonderful time when you are forced to scramble to the waiver wire to fill out rosters that are now missing a running back and a receiver or sometimes both running backs and receivers.

You didn’t pay attention to the bye weeks when you drafted your players; it was the best ones available and sort it out later.

Well, later has arrived.

But I have a few solutions to the problem.

A quick fix and one I’ve used in the past is to make a trade, but pinpoint teams with players who have already had their bye weeks. I like to try to do this a week or two before. For instance, I recently traded for Tony Romo, a player who has already had his bye.

Some players I would target to trade for or add from your waiver wire this week:

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers — It’s not a sexy name as far as fantasy goes, but these are Big Ben’s weekly point totals: 18, 23, 49, 15, and 33. And he’s already had his bye week, so he’s good to go for the rest of the season.

Andrew Luck, QB Indianapolis Colts — Same reason as Big Ben, but Luck is also coming off a bad week, so his/her owner might be in the mood to trade.

Cam Newton, QB Carolina Panthers — Look for an owner who is fed up and wants to move him, but it’s difficult to trade for players just coming off a bye because owners have already bit the bullet and do not want to acquire someone else who they are not going to have for a week because of a bye.

Denarius Moore, WR, Oakland Raiders — If he’s on your waiver wire, immediately go pick him up. The former Tatum standout was injured in the early weeks, but scored 23 points last week and most importantly has already had his bye week.

Felix Jones, RB, Dallas Cowboys — He’s the man right now for Jerry’s boys with Demarco Murray out with an injury and Dallas has already had its bye.
