LONGVIEW — A key interception late in the game helped the Spring Hill Panthers hold off the Gladewater Bears, 10-6, in a District 16-3A matchup Friday night.

Panther safety Jake Ferrill intercepted a Gladewater pass in the end zone late in the fourth quarter after muffing a punt just minutes earlier that gave the visiting Bears a first down on the Spring Hill 4-yard line. Ferrill dropped a punt by Gladewater’s Travis Dennis after the hosts forced a three-and-out near midfield.

After Bear quarterback Derrick Daniels lost a yard on first down, Ferrill got the pick in the end zone to quash the Gladewater effort.

It was Ferrill’s fifth interception of the season.

From that point — with less than eight minutes remaining in the game — neither team could do much except ring up penalties, including a pair of offsetting personal fouls that got a player from each team ejected.

Pine Tree 28, Nacogdoches 21

LONGVIEW — Pine Tree scored twice in the final minutes to escape with a 28-21 victory over winless Nacogdoches on Friday at Pine Tree Stadium.

The Dragons led 21-13 and had the ball before a fumble. Five plays later Jake Oden scored on a 6-yard keeper and Eddie Calico punched in the two-point conversion to tie the game with four minutes left.

Pine Tree’s Trevor Thomas then picked off a pass from Hunter McClellan and returned it to the Dragons 12 on the first play of the ensuing drive. One play later Jonathan Giddings ran to the 1 and fumbled into the end zone, where teammate Caleb Chumley came up with the ball for a Pirates touchdown and a 28-21 lead.

Patrick Ledet finished 11 of 22 for 174 yards and two scores and McClellan was 6 for 13 with 110 yards and a touchdown for the Dragons, who had a 365-290 advantage in total yards.

Palestine 39, Pittsburg 14

PITTSBURG — After the first half, it looked as if the Palestine and Pittsburg football teams were in for a dogfight at Pirate Stadium on Friday.

About halfway through the third quarter, it was merely a matter of how many points Palestine wanted to score.

The Wildcats scored 24 third quarter points — scoring points in all three facets in that span — to turn what was a 14-12 Pittsburg halftime lead into a 36-14 Palestine advantage by the time the third quarter buzzer sounded. In the end, the Wildcats left here with a 39-14 win.

Palestine actually scored 33-straight points in the game, counting the team’s second touchdown of the first half and a field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Groesbeck 40, Westwood 0

PALESTINE — Two weeks after posting a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Malakoff, the Westwood Panthers tumbled back to earth Friday.

Scoring touchdowns on five consecutive possessions spanning the second and third quarters, the Class 3A Groesbeck Goats used a high-powered passing attack to blank Westwood, 40-0, Friday night at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers, now 2-3, begin district action next week when they travel to Franklin.

With five pass plays of 25 yards or more, Goat quarterback Colt McCoy resembled the former University of Texas quarterback of the same name at times, completing 12-of-19 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns, including a 94-yarder to Matt Barnes in the first quarter.

Groesbeck tailback Terell Miles paced the Goat rushing attack with 125 yards on 11 carries, including second-half TD runs of 12 and 56 yards.

After seeing its passing game come to life in the victory over Malakoff, the Panthers, who were coming off a bye week, meanwhile, struggled through the air against Groesbeck, completing just 2-of-14 attempts for a mere 16 yards.

Keke Hicks, who played virtually the entire game at quarterback, provided most of Westwood’s offense on the ground, rushing for 102 yards on 20 carries.

Tatum 38, Diboll 6

DIBOLL — Shaquille Johnson scored four touchdowns to lead the way and the Tatum Eagles rebounded from a loss a week ago with a convincing 38-6 win over the Diboll Lumberjacks.

After a scoreless first quarter, Johnson scored on runs of 1 and 42 yards in the second quarter and added scoring runs of 31 and 1 yards in the second stanza. C.J. Whitaker’s 17-yard touchdown run late in the third gave the Eagles a 32-0 lead.

Johnson finished the night with 173 yards on 17 carries.

Andrew Stoker capped the scoring for the Eagles with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Raive Sheppard scored from 1-yard out in the fourth to put Diboll (1-4) on the board.

Tatum will visit White Oak next Friday. Diboll hosts Center.

Elysian Fields 49, Ore City 14

ELYSIAN FIELDS — An abundance of opportunities presented themselves for the Elysian Fields Yellow Jackets on Friday night at the expense of the Ore City Rebels. The end result was a 49-14 homecoming triumph that sent the partisans home happy.

Senior signal-caller Trevor Spear connected with fellow senior Nathan Hall twice for scores and added a 95-yarder to Haden Simmons as the Jackets notched their third win of the year and improved to 2-0 in District 9-2A, DII play.

All totaled, Spear finished 6 of 10 passing for 177 yards and 3 TDs. He also had 82 yards rushing on just five totes with a TD.

The Rebels (0-5, 0-2) turned in their best overall performance since the 2012 season opener. But, as has been the case all season, turnovers proved to be the undoing for this hard-luck bunch. Ore City actually held a 19-12 advantage in first downs after only managing two last week against Hughes Springs.

Leverett’s Chapel 48, Tyler HEAT 0

LAIRD HILL — The Leverett’s Chapel Lions needed only a half to complete its 48-0 win over Tyler HEAT Friday.

Leverett’s Chapel (5-1) won the half game based on the Texas’ six-man football rule that ends a game early if a team is winning 45-0 at halftime.

Clay White ran for four TDs and passed for two to lead the Lions. White rushed 10 times for 147 yards. He was 4 of 9 passing for 70 yards.

The Lions defense held the HEAT to only 115 yards, including 73 rushing.

The HEAT, a team made up of home-schooled athletes, falls to 4-2.

Leverett’s Chapel opens district play next week hosting Bloomburg.
