Comeback Cats: Bullard rallies past Chapel Hill, 42-41

BULLARD — The Bullard Panthers made the big plays when they needed them, handing Chapel Hill their second district loss in an exciting double-overtime 42-41 win over Chapel Hill in a District 16-3A showstopper Friday at Panther Stadium.

After the Bulldogs and Panthers swapped out touchdowns and PAT kicks in the first overtime, the Bulldogs elected to go for the win on a two-point conversion throw after a touchdown run by Londreyus McCown.



Panther defensive back Holden Bryant made the play of the game, intercepting the Bulldogs pass attempt for the win.

Chapel Hill (2-6, 1-2 in 16-3A) led 21-10 at halftime and the Bulldogs appeared to be in driver’s seat after a six-yard scoring run by McCown, and a Jesus Lopez PAT kick made it 28-17 with just seven minutes remaining.

Bullard (6-1, 2-1) responded with a comeback for the ages, which began with a 27-yard field goal from Weston Gray.

The Panthers still trailed by eight points with time running out. In the final minute of play when Brentavian Henderson scored on a six-yard run to make it 28-26 with 44 seconds on the clock.

But Bullard still needed a two-point conversion to tie.

Houston Alexander accomplished that, scoring on a conversion run to tie things up and send the game into overtime.

The first overtime score came from Thompson on a one-yard run, and the Lopez PAT kick good gave Chapel Hill the lead again.

The Panthers answered back as Sal Guiliano made his fifth catch of the game, this one a 29-yard score and Gray’s PAT kick sent the game into the second OT.

Bullard quarterback Colton Mebane ran 20 yards on the first play of the second session to set up a one-yard scoring run by Henderson’s one-yard scoring run.

Gray’s extra point made it 42-35 with Chapel Hill’s turn to answer.

The Bulldogs came right back and got a four-yard run from McCown. On the two-point try for the win, Trevor Rumbelow and Billy Tomlin pressured Andrew Black on his pass attempt which was snagged by Bryant to keep Bullard alive in the tough district race.

Chapel Hill’s Wesley Thompson put the Bulldogs on the board first at the startof the game with a 38-yard catch and run off a pass from Black. Black followed his scoring pass with a two-point conversion run and 8-0 lead.

Bullard answered quickly with Mebane catching a 27-yard pass after a 29-yard run from Houston Alexander. Haden Bryant capped off the five-play drive with a 27-yard grab in the end zone. Weston Gray booted the extra point to make it 8-7 entering the second quarter.

The Panthers gained their only lead of regulation just as the second quarter began when Gray was true on a 30-yard field goal and a 10-8, Bullard advantage.

Chapel Hill then put together a nine-play scoring drive that took 4:03 off the clock before Joseph Clark rumbled in from one-yard away to regain the Chapel Hill lead at the 5:57 mark on the clock. The PAT kick was blocked by Haden Bryant to hold the score to a 14-10.

The Panthers will hit the road to play at Henderson this next Friday, at Lions Stadium, at 7:30 p.m. while Chapel Hill returns home to entertain Kilgore.
