UT Tyler opened its season in grand style, setting a school record for points in a 119-98 win over Paul Quinn College on Saturday before 563 rowdy fans at the Herrington Patriot Center.
The previous record was set in a 122-112 loss against Concordia-Texas on Dec. 2, 2006 in Austin.
Travis Dykman, a transfer from Emporia State, led the Patriots with 28 points.
Darren Houliston, the only returning starter from last year, added 24 points for UT Tyler.
Nathan Harbour and Jordan Cannon were next in line with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Tre Potter also added 10 points.
“It is a great way to start the year,” UT Tyler coach Kenny Bizot said. “It was important. We have talked about getting some kind of tradition at home. We want to make this a difficult place for people to play. I think we got off to a good start with that, putting up this many points. … I know it sounds crazy with us giving up 98, but I thought we did a good job defensively. This team (Paul Quinn) is used to scoring 120 and the crowd was great. … The team came together well.”
Myron Dempsey led the Tigers with 22 points, while Aaron McCuin pitched in 20 points.
It was the first loss of the season for Paul Quinn, which entered the game with a 5-0 record.
After a week off, the Patriots hit the road for four straight games. Next up is the American Southwest Conference opener Saturday at Howard Payne.
